Charge: Impaired driving causing death
Verdict: asked to adjourn case for a week, will apply to have Burrows’ bail revoked in connection with a deadly crash last Dec. 23, as a result of his latest charges
The driver was charged in March in connection with a crash last Dec. 23, on Glenmore Trail S.W. and later released on bail
The city man accused of fleeing a traffic stop last week, before smashing into a parked car and damaging several vehicles, was on bail for impaired driving causing death.
Kane Anignostis Burrows appeared briefly in Calgary Court of Justice on Monday, where defence lawyer Alain Hepner asked to adjourn his case for a week.
Hepner told Justice Clarissa Pearce he has been given notice by the Crown it will apply to have Burrows’ bail revoked in connection with a deadly crash last Dec. 23, as a result of his latest charges.
“I’m not seeking judicial interim release at this point,” Hepner said, in asking that his client be remanded in custody until at least Aug. 18.
“He remains in custody for the next week.”
Burrows, 19, was arrested in the early morning hours last Friday after police say a 2018 BMW M5 fled a traffic stop before heading northbound on Macleod Trail at a high rate of speed.
“As the vehicle approached 58th Avenue S.W., it is believed the driver attempted to turn westbound onto 58th Avenue S.W., while fleeing a traffic stop,” Calgary police said in a news release.
“The BMW then struck the rear of a parked vehicle, causing a chain reaction that damaged seven parked vehicles.”
Burrows, who appeared in court via closed-circuit TV from the Calgary Remand Centre, did not address Pearce during the short proceeding.
Crown prosecutor Cassandra Sampson asked that a previously scheduled preliminary inquiry in connection with the impaired driving causing death allegation for Nov. 4 to 6 be maintained.
Burrows was charged in March in connection with a crash on Glenmore Trail S.W. last Dec. 23, and later released on bail.

According to a police news release, the driver of a 2018 BMW M240i lost control on a bend in the road and entered the right shoulder of the eastbound lanes and struck a stationary crane.
There were two passengers in the car, an 18-year-old male and a 21-year-old male, police said.
“The driver of the BMW sustained serious injuries, the 18-year-old passenger was transferred to hospital in life-threatening condition where he later succumbed to his injuries, the 21-year-old passenger had minor injuries and the crane operator was uninjured.”
Burrows faces charges including impaired driving causing the death of Zachary Legault, and impaired driving causing bodily harm to Kristjan Kuqali.
Among his bail conditions were that he not consume alcohol or drive.
His new charges include allegations he was impaired at the time of the crash and violated those two release conditions.
